If you do not like the parsley that is sold in stores, you can easily grow this unpretentious plant and at home. It is better to buy varieties rich in greens and early ripening: Yielding, Ordinary Leaf, Curly Sue, Prima, Bordovinskaya, Curly, Sugar Loaf. There are two options for how to grow parsley on the windowsill: forcing root crops or sowing seeds. Choose the one that seems most comfortable to you, and boldly plant parsley at home.

Planting parsley root vegetables

It is good when parsley grows on the window sill at any time of the year, because with fresh greenery the dishes become more aromatic, tastier and more appetizing. Yes, and the beneficial properties of parsley have a beneficial effect on the body, promoting healing from various diseases.

Growing parsley at home by forcing root vegetables is not at all difficult - this occupation will not give you unnecessary trouble. Before freezing the soil, dig up a few parsley root crops from the garden along with the petioles or purchase them in the vegetable department of the store, making sure that there is no damage to the roots. Root crops can be of any size, but the diameter of 2-4 cm is considered the most optimal. The larger the root crop, the more kidneys it will form and the leaves will grow, and besides, it will take longer to grow such parsley at home.

Care for parsley on the windowsill

The rules of plant care on the windowsill are slightly different from those that are observed when growing plants in open ground.

First of all, it is necessary to control the soil moisture. Watering is carried out regularly, but at the same time neither drying nor excessive moisture of the soil can be allowed.

Note: If pots or boxes stand near the battery, watering is carried out more often, and sprouting sprouts are periodically sprayed so that the air is not too dry.

It is also necessary to maintain a stable temperature. The optimal rate is 15-20 degrees. When it decreases, it will grow more slowly, and if the plants get hot, they will begin to dry out.

After germination, thinning is performed, removing the weakest shoots. In winter, it is necessary to increase the length of daylight by installing a fluorescent lamp above the pots.

Parsley: planting and care in the open field

Before sowing, they dig and fertilize the bed. By this time, the soil should warm up, so the landing is most often carried out in early or mid-April.

Planting and care for root and leaf varieties in open ground includes (Figure 4):

  • Shallow grooves are made on the prepared bed, placing them at a distance of 15-20 cm from each other,
  • After sowing, the seeds are sprinkled with a thin layer of earth and watered,
  • Before the emergence of seedlings cover the film. This will not only accelerate seed germination, but also prevent the evaporation of moisture,
  • When growing root varieties, the plants are fed several times in a season. Leaf species do not require additional fertilization.
  • Watering is required only in the absence of rain. The soil should not be too wet, as in this situation the roots will begin to rot.

Also in the process of growing periodically thinned shoots. This requirement is especially important for root varieties, since the leaf is periodically cut for fresh consumption.

Growing parsley in a greenhouse

Growing parsley in the greenhouse, you get fresh greens, even in winter. In addition, there is much more space in the greenhouse than on the windowsill.

Due to the resistance to cold, sowing begins in January. But this applies only to heated rooms. In the greenhouse without heating, the last crop is harvested in December, and the new one is sown not earlier than March.

Growing greens in the greenhouse is carried out according to the following rules (Figure 5):

  • Equip artificial lighting to extend daylight. It accelerates the growth of seedlings and activates the formation of green mass,
  • Watering is carried out as drying of the top layer of soil. As a rule, the soil is moistened after the next cut of greenery,
  • Humidity should not be below 75%, and the temperature - 12-15 degrees. If this figure is higher, the leaves will start to wilt,
  • Airing is carried out periodically, but drafts and sudden changes in temperature should not be allowed.

Soil can be used almost any. But, if possible, preference should be given to moderately fruitful light soil.

Growing parsley in the garden

In comparison with growing in a greenhouse or in the garden, forcing greenery in the garden is much easier. To do this, it is enough to dig up and fertilize the bed with organic matter in the fall, and in the spring to loosen it again, making mineral fertilizers.

Pre-soaked seeds are sown in shallow grooves, sprinkled on top of a small layer of soil, lightly watered and covered with film. When the first shoots appear, the film is removed. As the growth of greenery, plants periodically thin out. You can also make dressing, and when the soil dries out - conduct evening watering at room temperature.

It is recommended to sow in several passes, after about 3 weeks. So you will constantly receive a harvest of fresh greens until late autumn.

Picking parsley

Leaf parsley is cut gradually, as it is grown. With the onset of autumn cold, you can cut off all the leaves, chop them and store them frozen or dried (Figure 6).

Root crops are harvested a few days before the onset of sustained autumn frosts. Some roots can be left in the ground to get fresh greens in early spring. Root vegetables are cleaned from tops and stored in a dark cool place with good ventilation.

Parsley seeds: the benefits and harm

What should be the soil for planting

First, the place itself is prepared for the soil. Tanks taken for it (boxes or pots) are treated with a disinfectant non-concentrated solution of potassium permanganate. In a pot intended for growing greens at home, there should be a drainage layer and a hole to remove excess moisture. For root crops soil can be used as a store, and you can prepare a mixture of garden soil, turf and humus in the ratio of 7: 1: 2. Phosphate fertilizers and lime are simultaneously added to this mixture. For seeds, the substrate is taken from biohumus and coconut fiber (1: 2).

How to plant parsley seeds

In general, parsley grown from seeds is quite fastidious. But additional efforts are worth it - for more than a year after that, fresh greens will be at your disposal.

Planting seeds is as follows:

  • 24 hours before sowing, seeds are poured with water in order to remove essential oils that prevent rapid germination,
  • 2 hours before the main procedure, water is changed for a weak solution of potassium permanganate,
  • The planting itself takes place to a depth of only 0.5 cm, but 1 cm more soil is poured on top.

Growing parsley from root vegetables

This method is not too troublesome. Before the soil in the garden freezes, root crops with petioles are dug out in the right amount. Option - buying in a store or on the market. In both cases, the roots should not be damaged. Their magnitude may fluctuate. Close to optimal diameter is from 2 to 4 cm. On a larger root, more buds and leaves will appear. In the prepared and moistened soil, placed in a box (pot), root crops are planted at a distance of 2 cm from each other. The spacing between rows is twice as large. The heads of root crops are not covered. After planting, the soil is slightly crushed and watered well.

Prepare a parsley bed 2-4 weeks before sowing:

  1. Clear the place from weeds and vegetable garbage.
  2. They dig at shovels bayonets, putting fertilizers in the soil: they use humus or compost at a rate of 5–10 kg / m 2, superphosphate - 30–40 g / m 2, and also wood ash in the amount of 1–2 l / m 2.

When sub-winter sowing, time is chosen so that the seeds do not have time to rise before the frost. The best time is when the temperature drops to -2–3 ° C, and the ground is covered with a crust of ice.

Is it possible to plant parsley in June

Usually such a need does not arise, since the parsley sown before winter or in early spring will provide the gardener with greens for the whole season. But if for some reason it wasn’t planted at the optimum time, then it can be done in the summer. At the same time, it is necessary to be prepared for the fact that in hot dry weather conditions, seedlings will be weak and will require additional care efforts:

  • shelter with lightweight spanbond from drying up the soil,
  • more frequent watering
  • loosening
  • weeding.

And sow parsley in the summer is better in partial shade. And you can also apply a seedling method of growing.

Purchase of seeds

The first thing you should pay attention to is the name of the manufacturer. Choosing well-known brands that are well proven in the market, you can count on a positive result. Most popular manufacturers:

  • "Seeds of Altai"
  • "Seeds of Crimea" and others.

The second important factor is the date of seed production. And it is the production, and not the expiration date. It is important. The fact is that some manufacturers proceed from the timing of germination up to 4 years, which is indicated on the packaging. But it is not so. In the fourth year the seeds, of course, will sprout, but not all. Their germination will be quite low - no more than 10%. It is better to use seeds that have been stored for no more than 2-3 years. And they should be stored in a dry room at a temperature of 10-15 ° C.

Soaking before planting

Parsley seeds do not calibrate and do not disinfect. The presence in their shell of essential oils produces a deterrent effect for most pests and infections. But these same oils slow down the germination of seeds, therefore, in order to speed up this process, they often resort to soaking them:

  1. Two weeks before sowing, seeds are dipped in warm water for two days, at the same time changing water every four hours.
  2. After this, it is possible to additionally hold the seed in a solution of growth stimulants (Zircon, Appin, Ecogel, etc.) for 20-30 minutes.
  3. Then the seeds are dried and sown.

Soaking parsley seeds in vodka

A faster way to preplant preparation is to soak the seeds in regular vodka. To do this, wrap them in gauze, immersed in a glass of alcohol, and after 15 minutes removed and washed in running water. Then dried and used for sowing as usual. It is believed that after such a procedure, essential oils dissolve completely, and seedlings can be expected already 3-5 days after sowing.

Planting seeds in open ground

In order for the seeds in the ground to be at the same depth and not too lowered into the ground, the bottom of the prepared groove is compacted with a small plank 25-30 mm thick. After that, the seeds are evenly sown along the length of the grooves, without fear of them thicken. The thicker the seedlings will be, the more green mass will eventually be. But the measure, of course, need to know. With excessive thickened stems will be thin and weak, so you need to be guided by common sense. Usually the manufacturer recommends a seeding rate of 1 g / m 2 - and it should be followed.

After sowing, the seeds are covered with loose soil or humus in a layer of 1-2 cm. Then they are carefully watered from a watering can and covered with a spunbond with a density of 17-30 g / m 2. If sowing is carried out in the autumn before winter, the garden bed should not be watered.

How to plant parsley seeds at home

In small quantities parsley can be grown right in the kitchen. To do this, take a suitable box or container with holes in the bottom to remove excess moisture. Its depth should be at least 15-20 centimeters.

At the bottom is placed a small (3-4 cm) layer of expanded clay as a drain, and on top is a nutrient substrate. It is better to use as the last a mixture of one part of biohumus and two parts of coconut fiber. And you can also use ready-made soil for seedlings or a home-made composition, the recipe of which is almost every gardener.

Parsley is sown in moist soil in rows with an interval of 5-10 cm to a depth of 0.5-1 cm, covered with a layer of soil up to 2 cm. After that, moisten the surface layer with a spray bottle, cover with a film and remove the container in a dark warm place until germination. At the same time, they do not forget to moisten the soil regularly (every other day).

Sowing parsley in boiling water

This phrase is often found on the Internet. In fact, this set of words is far from the truth - it is impossible to sow parsley (or another crop) in boiling water. The only result of such an action may be getting a decoction for some purpose. The use of boiling water or hot water when sowing will help speed seed germination by dissolving the layer of essential oils. Do it in two ways:

  • in the first case, the seeds are placed in hot water at a temperature of 45–48 ° С (no more!) for 30–40 minutes, then sown.
  • in the second case, use really boiling water. They shed grooves in the garden immediately before sowing, after which the seeds are sown in the heated land. At the same time, in addition to accelerating the emergence of shoots, the soil is also disinfected.

Seedling method

Sometimes parsley is grown using the seedling method. Grown seedlings aged 1.5 months transplanted into open ground or in the greenhouse. Обычно делают это в начале-середине мая.
