My garden is a real field for experimentation. Every year I pick up new varieties of plants and find a comfortable place for them on the site. For example, calicant is one of my favorite shrubs. The plant requires complex care, but all the effort and time spent on it, more than compensated for the abundant and decorative flowering, during which the flowers emit a pleasant sweet aroma. In the article I want to talk about how to plant and care for calicante in open ground.

Plant description

Kalikant is a perennial deciduous shrub of the Kalikanty family. Among gardeners, the plant is more known under the name cup flower, since the name is derived from the Greek words “cup” and “flower”. It has a strong aroma; Calicanth is called “Jamaican pepper” in its homeland. It prefers warm regions, therefore it is rarely found in temperate latitudes of Russia. Plant features:

  • depending on the variety, the height varies from 1 to 4 m,
  • length of bright green leaves up to 15 cm, arranged oppositely,
  • the flowers are quite large, have bent sepals, but the petals are not formed,
  • during flowering, the plant emits a strong camphor odor,
  • in the second half of summer, the fruit is formed in the form of a dry capsule, resembling a pear,
  • poisonous plant, when it gets vegetable juice on the body, it causes dermatitis, breathing problems.

The color of the flowers is very diverse. Depending on the type of variety, it can be white, pink or reddish. Purple varieties are most popular.

Species diversity

The plant is only becoming popular in landscape design, only three main species for planting are common. Description of Calicanth species:

  • Flowering. The homeland of the plant is North America, where the bush forms voluminous plantings and even impassable thickets. The height of the bush reaches 2.5 m, the growth rate is slow. The leaves are opposite to each other, painted in a saturated green color. Flowering occurs in May, can last up to several months. Depending on the variety, they are colored in yellow, red or reddish brown,
  • Prolific. The most winter-hardy type of plant. The flowers have a less pronounced aroma during budding. The leaves are long and pointed, glossy surface mild. Buds formed from May, re-bloom is possible in June. The flowers are painted in purple shades,
  • Chinese. In the wild form is found in China. The leaves have pronounced gloss and pubescence on the bottom. In autumn, they become bright yellow. Flowers, large, painted in pink or white. The most famous variety of this species is Pink Jade.

When choosing a variety for planting on your site should consider the stability, size and flowering features. The plant is quite capricious, so it is desirable to acquire only resistant varieties.

Site selection and conditions of detention

Calicant is recommended to be grown only in warm regions in early spring, since the flowering and active growth of the plant occurs during this period. When choosing a place, it is advisable to give preference to well-lit areas with a shadow in the noon time. For this purpose, suitable areas near trees that have a high crown. It is undesirable to plant a shrub in places with a constant shadow.

Calicant grows best on fertile and nutritious soils with a neutral or slightly acidic reaction. Some varieties may feel comfortable on clay or sandy soils. The main condition for the substrate is the presence of a good drainage system, which allows you to avoid stagnation of water in the sensitive root system.

Landing technology

Calicant in the climate of Russia is usually planted with grown seedlings in a container. Buy planting material is best in a special nursery or specialty store. Some gardeners grow a plant from seed, but this method is more complicated and does not always lead to a positive result. The optimal time for planting is the early spring after reaching a stable warm air and soil temperature. Stepwise Algorithm:

  1. Qualitatively dig a place to the depth of a spade bayonet, remove stones and plant debris. Dig a hole 2 times larger than a container with a sapling.
  2. Lay a drainage layer up to 7 cm thick at the bottom of the landing hole, as a material fit broken brick, expanded clay or pebbles.
  3. Carefully remove the plant from the container, place it in the planting hole so that all the roots are completely covered with soil. Supplement the remaining volume with a nutrient mixture of fertile soil and humus.
  4. Abundantly water the planting to mulch the entire area of the circle of the trunk.

If there is a chance of night frosts in the near future, it is advisable to cover the plant with spruce or straw every evening. Calicanth seedlings are most sensitive to low temperatures.

It is interesting

You could meet calicantes not only on the southern coast of the Crimea and the Black Sea coast of the Krasnodar Territory, but also in Odessa, Lviv, Kiev, Chernivtsi, China, California, etc.
The flowers of calicantes are pollinated by beetles that penetrate into the half-opened flower for food — white succulent bodies rich in proteins, fats and starch.

The Latin name of the plant is connected with the fact that sepals participate in the terry of its flowers.

Calicantes have a close-up little-known relative - the shinokalikantus or the Chinese shinokalikant. This monotypic genus was singled out separately not long ago: in the 60s of the last century. I admit honestly: I did not know about him. Calicantes with white flowers led me to it.

Chinese Sinokalikantus or Sinokalikant

Chinese Sinokalikantus or Synokalikant (Sinocalycanthus chinensissyn. Calycanthus chinensis) - deciduous shrub 3 m high and 4 m wide. It comes from East China. The leaves are broadly oval, up to 15 cm long. The flowers are cup-shaped, similar to camellia flowers, white with a pink shade, pink, with a diameter of 7 cm, bloom in late May - early June.

Plant Care

Calicant grows well in our climate and is able to easily endure even the most severe winters. Naturally, he needs to create certain conditions for comfortable growth, and which ones - we will now consider with you.

Blooming calicant loves well-lit places, but at the same time it will be better to plant it in such a way that at midday the plant will appear in the shade or in the penumbra.

It is allowed to plant shrubs next to trees with a rare crown - this will allow the plant to receive the right amount of light and protect it from direct sunlight.

Temperature

The shrub grows well in both hot and cooler regions. It is necessary to choose a place for him depending on the climatic conditions in which the planting is supposed: in the southern areas it is necessary to give preference to shaded areas, and in the northern areas - to boldly plant it in the open sun.

Of course, fertile and nutritious substrates are in priority, but this plant is quite tolerant to the composition of the soil, therefore it can grow and develop perfectly on clay and sandy soils. A prerequisite for favorable growth and development of the plant is a drainage layer, not less than 20 cm.

The plant must be moderately watered: the soil around the shrub should be wet, but in no case should not be overwetted. In hot, dry weather, irrigation intensity increases as the soil dries.

To retain moisture, it is recommended to mulch the ground around the shrub. You can use sawdust, peat and foliage. Mulch will retain water and protect calicant from drying out.

On hot days, it will not be superfluous to spray his crown with purified water - this will help the leaves to get enough moisture, protecting them from drying out and yellowing.

It is necessary to fertilize the shrubs in early spring, with organic fertilizers or mineral supplements.

Experts recommend the first pruning immediately after planting. Calicant tends to grow strongly, due to which it takes on a not too neat appearance. But this can be avoided if initially form the plant.

Then pruning is carried out after flowering - this removes dried and damaged branches, as well as pinching young shoots.

Calicanth refers to winter-hardy plants. It absolutely freezes frost to -30 ° C. Experienced gardeners recommend, despite the high resistance to frost, to cover the bushes with spruce branches - this will protect them from strong winds and precipitation that can damage the branches.

Use in landscape design

Beautiful and fragrant shrubs can decorate your site in a single planting, and in the group. If you plant it, for example, with fragrant perennials such as lavender, wormwood and sage, they will not only look great together, but also create an unusual atmosphere in the garden, filling it with an indescribable fragrance.

Flowering shrub looks great surrounded by lawn grass. Loosely planted Calicantha bushes along the fence, the walls of a building or footpath look very decorative, and at any time of the year.

Diseases and pests

Calicanth refers to plants that are resistant to diseases and pests. The only disease to which it is exposed is rotting of the root system. But this problem can be easily prevented: for this, it is only necessary to make good drainage and properly water the plant.

So, blooming calicant is a beautiful, unpretentious shrub, which also has a wonderful aroma. It is worth noting that not only its flowers smell, but also the foliage, and even the bark, which can be dried and used as a flavoring. This plant will help to create a pleasant and cozy atmosphere in the garden and the house.
