General information

How to multiply azalea at home

Household azaleas are propagated from spring to August, as a rule, by stem cuttings in an acidic substrate, at a temperature of 25 degrees. Cuttings should be covered with a glass jar or plastic wrap, regularly watered and sprayed. The cuttings of this plant are cut only after flowering, from 10 to 15 cm long. But remember that fattening shoots are not suitable for this. It is necessary to choose young shoots, half-lignified, it is better to take the tip of the escape of the current year.

The bottom three leaflets on the handle are cut, leaving 0.5 cm stem. The remaining leaves are cut in half. The lower oblique cut is done under the kidney itself, preferably under a group of crowded 3-4 leaflets. Cuttings should be harvested only from healthy and well-developed plants.

Before planting, the cuttings are tied in several pieces and immersed in a lower cut into a solution of heteroauxin (2 tablets per 1 l of water) for 6 hours. You can soak in the root or zircon. After that, they are planted in bowls, boxes or greenhouses in the nutrient substrate to a depth of 2-3 cm according to the scheme 4x4 cm.

Rooting cuttings will be faster if the land substrate will be acidic. An azalea pot is filled with a substrate (a special azalea mixture or slightly decomposed peat). Then, without moistening the earth mixture in advance, they pour water "from the heart" out of it. Pots with cuttings several times a week should be aired. To do this, it is enough for a short time to remove the plastic bag from the flowerpot.

If everything is done correctly, then rooting of cuttings should be expected within 1-1.5 months at a temperature regime of 20-25 degrees. Rooted cuttings for the week before transplanting to a permanent place "accustom" to the dry air of our apartments. First, they open the greenhouse for 2-3 hours, and after several hardening sessions, they are completely removed. Already hardened and rooted cuttings are transplanted to a permanent place and again covered with a film for 1-2 weeks, so that they are better acclimatized.

2-3 months after transplanting to another dish, the tops of young plants are pinched to form young shoots and to form a shrub. The first flower buds are removed. This contributes to better growth of shoots. In March, pinch a second time and cut off 4-6 new shoots. After that, the young azaleas are transplanted into 9-11 cm pots with good drainage. The substrate is prepared from different parts of coniferous soil and peat. Plants are watered moderately with warm water. It is possible to grow young plants from cuttings in 2-3 years.

Specific rules for reproduction

  • you need to cut the stalk with a blade or with a sharp knife under the kidney,
  • leaves are removed from the bottom of the stalk,
  • the resulting cutting is then placed in wet peat, deepening by about 3-5 cm,
  • the ground around the planted stem is well crushed,
  • closed with a jar, or placed in a greenhouse, or covered with plastic bag,
  • rooting will require high humidity, as well as a temperature of about 25 degrees Celsius,
  • three times a day, the cuttings need to be sprayed and ventilated.

The most active growth promoter for azaleas is p-indolylbutyric acid, but p-indolylacetic acid or succinic acid can also be used. They can be used in the form of powder, paste or solution of the desired concentration. Also, an excellent influence on the home reproduction of the plant is shown by the heating of the soil and the use of root formation stimulants.

How can I multiply the azalea

After successful reproduction - young azalea seedlings receive the so-called “immunity” to the conditions of their growth, adapting to a specific environment. Even if the purchased bush was quite capricious, new plants will be pleasing to the eye in the same way, but at the same time caring for them will be painstaking though not so troublesome.

At home, azalea is easiest to propagate in three ways:

  • Cuttings,
  • Dividing the bush
  • Seeds.

Azalea cuttings at home

Reproduction of azalea cuttings at home is carried out in spring or summer. To do this, it is best to use young shoots that have not yet become tree-like. The effectiveness of the event will depend not only on the choice and proper preparation of planting material, but also the soil and the creation of favorable conditions for rooting.

Selection and preparation of cuttings

Strong and healthy azalea bushes are suitable for breeding, because otherwise the quality of the cuttings and their survival rate will be low. Cut off shoots from an adult plant should be as follows:

  • The pruner or sharp knife is pre-disinfected, wiping with alcohol, washing in a solution of hot water and laundry soap or bright pink potassium permanganate,
  • Cuttings are suitable for cutting from 4 to 7 cm in length, and they should have at least 5 true sheets,
  • Cut the shoots need obliquely under the lower bud, making an indentation of about 1 cm from it,
  • On the cuttings removed, the lower leaves are removed, and in the remaining part about half of the remaining foliage is removed,
  • For better rooting, the sections of planting material are recommended to be soaked for 5-6 hours in a solution of "Zircon", "Kornevina" and other similar preparations prepared according to the instructions on the package.

Propagation of azaleas at home with seeds

Growing azaleas from seeds - quite difficult and painstaking work, which is appropriate for obtaining new hybrids. At the same time, seedlings are unlikely to inherit characteristics of the mother plant, but after successful breeding your collection of indoor plants can be replenished with beautiful and unique specimens.

At home, azalea rarely sets seed boxes, but if you wish, you can always buy seed in specialized nurseries. At the same time, seeds whose age does not exceed 3 months will have the best germination.

The scheme of sowing seeds is as follows:

  1. A soil mix is poured into the seedling tray (the same as for adult plants).
  2. The seeds are mixed with a small amount of sand and sown on the surface of the substrate.
  3. It is not necessary to sprinkle them on top of the earth - it is enough to spray them with a room-temperature separated water from a spray bottle.
  4. Then the tray is covered with glass or transparent film and placed in a well-lit place that will ensure good germination of seeds.
  5. Tray with planted seeds should be regularly ventilated, and instead of watering spraying should be performed with soft water (you can soften it by adding ½ teaspoon of oxalic acid to 6 liters).
  6. When the seeds germinate, the film or glass must be completely removed.
  7. When azaleas appear on sprouts of 2 true leaves - the seedlings need to be dived into a common container, carefully removing the old container along with the earthy clod.
  8. Planting of pickled seedlings is carried out in a substrate of the same composition, while keeping the distance between individual shoots approximately 5 cm.

Young azalea seedlings can be transplanted into separate pots at the end of August. However, you need to remember - the flowering will not come soon, because the budding will occur in about 5 years.

Care and reproduction

In this article we will try to answer questions that are of interest to many flower growers:

  • how azalea flowers multiply and how to care for them,
  • How to plant and how to plant azalea at home?

How to multiply at home?

Azalea can be propagated from spring to August in several ways: cuttings, seeds and dividing the bush. It is a painstaking work that requires considerable patience from the grower.

How does azalea reproduce at home?

The most reliable method is reproduction of azaleas cuttings, which gives up to 90% success.

How to multiply azalea room at home cuttings? This procedure is carried out as follows:

  1. After a healthy plant ottsvetet, cuttings are cut from it about 10 cm long - for this take the tops of half-year shoots. Cuttings are cut by a scythe directly under the kidney.
  2. Three or four lower leaves are gently removed, leaving about a stalk of about 0.5 cm, and the remaining leaves are cut half in half.
  3. For better rooting, azalea cuttings are immersed in slices in a solution of “Zircon”, “Kornevina” or “Heteroauxin” and left in it for 5-6 hours.
  4. Next, put a drainage layer with a thickness of up to 3 cm and sprinkle it with a layer of sand 2 cm thick at the bottom of the bowl or drawer. Then the container is filled with an acidic nutrient mixture.

The ready soil for azaleas or a mixture of equal shares of coniferous earth (rotted needles) and peat is best suited.

  • The cuttings are planted in the substrate, deepening by 3 cm and maintaining a distance of 4 cm between them. After that, the soil is well spilled.
  • The container with the cuttings is covered with a film, thus creating a “mini-teplichka”, and put it on a bright place with shading. Then the cuttings are regularly sprayed and aired every day in the morning, opening the film for 35-40 minutes.

The soil should always be slightly wet. Also experienced gardeners recommend lower heating.

  • At a temperature of 25 to 30 ° C and a humidity of 80%, cuttings are usually rooted in a month or one and a half, after which they can be transplanted into permanent pots. 7-8 days before transplantation, rooted cuttings begin to harden. First, the "greenhouse" open for a couple of hours, then - for a longer time. A week later, the "greenhouse" fully open.
  • Next, the cuttings are transplanted into separate containers and covered with film for 11-12 days. After two or three months, young bushes are pinned to the top for the growth of new shoots and better tillering. If the plant has collected the first buds, it is recommended to remove them.
  • After the azalea perezimuet, at the beginning of March, it pinch again. You can cut up to 6 young shoots. Next, the plant is transferred to a new tank with a diameter of about 11 cm with holes for water flow and a good drainage layer.

In the future, a young azalea is looked after as an adult. After a couple of years, it will unfold in all its glory and will please the grower with abundant flowering.

Home-made cuttings multiply many plants, for example, Balsam, Kolstyanka, Croton and many others.

Propagation of room azalea seeds is even more complicated and time-consuming process.

The seeds of a plant hardly germinate and do not retain varietal characteristics. In addition, they remain viable only for 3 months.

But it's worth a try, because this is a very fascinating process, as a result of which you can grow an azalea with completely unexpected colors of flowers.

The seed planting algorithm is as follows:

    1. In early March, small seeds of the plant are mixed with sand and sown on the wetted surface of the substrate. The container is covered with glass and placed in a sunny place - azalea seeds are photosensitive and germinate only under the rays of the sun.
    2. Further, the "greenhouse" is regularly aired and the substrate is sprayed from a small atomizer with soft and well-settled water. It can be softened with oxalic acid, diluting 4 g of the substance in 10 liters of water.

When watering should not overmoisten the ground so that the seedlings are not rotted.

  • If the seeds are fresh, the first seedlings can be expected in 14-15 days or a little earlier. After 3 weeks, all seeds will germinate. Germination of up to 70%.
  • When the cotyledons are almost fully unfolded, the seedlings, along with a clod of earth, swoop into another container, keeping a distance of about 3 cm between the seeds. The composition of the soil is the same as for cuttings.
  • In August, the grown small bushes are transplanted into separate pots of no more than 7 cm in diameter and take care of them in the same way as cuttings.

Azalea, grown from seed, begins to bloom after 5 years.

At home, not only azalea can be grown from seeds, but also many other beautiful flowers, such as Geranium and Beloperon.

    Dividing bush

Another way of growing azaleas is by dividing a bush.

To do this, use only a healthy branched plant aged at least 3-4 years and with a well-developed and intact root system. After flowering, the azalea bush is removed from the pot and carefully divided into several parts, taking care not to damage the thin roots. Next, delenki are seated in separate shallow containers, they shed the soil well in them and put the plants in a shaded place for a week.

How to and when to transplant azalea at home?

Young plants are recommended to replant annually, and adults - every two or three years.

Azalea transplant is carried out in the spring, after flowering.

Azalea transplantation is not recommended during budding and flowering.

Otherwise, the plant can throw off the buds, flowers and leaves. It will be difficult to save him.

How to transplant azalea? When transplanting azaleas, it is important to know that it has a very sensitive root system, which has its own microflora. On its roots live mushrooms that provide azalea with good nutrition. Therefore, it is very important not to break this symbiosis during transplantation.

For the healthy development of the plant is very important the right substrate. It is desirable that it be acidic, with a pH from 4.5 to 5.5, light and nutritious.

You can take a ready-made mixture called "Azalea" or prepare the soil yourself, taking 1 part peat and 2 parts of rotted pine needles. Or you can mix in equal parts peat, humus, sand, turf and leaf land and add to them 5 pieces of coniferous earth. Another option:

    • part of the sand
    • part of dried and shredded sphagnum moss
    • 2 pieces of rotted needles.

For azaleas with a superficial root system, the new capacity should be chosen fairly wide and not very deep, but 5 cm above the previous one.

At the bottom of the pot is placed a layer of drainage at least 3 cm thick in the form of large expanded clay or broken shards. A layer of pine bark is put on the drainage (it helps to increase the acidity of the soil), and then the container is filled with the prepared soil. It is useful to add to the substrate "Trichodermin" to prevent fungal infections and rot.

Before transplanting azaleas dry branches are cut off, withered buds and clean the stalks from dried leaves. Next, the bush, along with a lump of earth, is taken out of the pot and placed in the roots with a bowl of filtered or boiled water and “Kornyovin” or “Zircon” dissolved in it.

The procedure is repeated, changing the water twice. Azalea roots very densely twist a lump of earth, therefore it is impossible to completely remove it, and it is not necessary. However, such bathing helps to wash most of the salts that have accumulated in the soil during the year.

Before immersing a plant in water, it is recommended to make cuts in an earthen coma with a knife - these should be grooves about 0.5 cm wide on the sides, bottom and top. This will help the roots to get saturated with moisture, it is easier to settle and grow in new soil. Otherwise, they will not be able to get enough nutrients and dry out, which can lead to the death of the plant.

After a part of the land (usually not more than a third) is washed out of the roots, you can proceed to transplant, or rather, to transfer the flower into a new pot. It is taken out of the basin and, when the water is drained, is placed in the center of the tank, and then evenly sprinkled the roots with earth, slightly tamping. It is very important not to bury the root neck of the plant.

If the azalea has grown too large, it is divided into bushes, cutting the root ball into several parts according to the number of cleats. Each bush with a lump of earth is placed in a separate pot.

What to do after an azalea transplant?

After transplantation, the azalea is poured abundantly with water, in which it has soaked, and placed in a warm and bright place with shading from the sun's rays. Watering is repeated after four days. In the penumbra, the plant is kept for about 12 days. It is useful to spray the flower “Zircon” or “Epin”, which has not yet become stronger after transplantation.

You should also protect the weakened plant from drafts. It is not necessary to fertilize the transplanted flower immediately, it is necessary to give it the opportunity to adapt and get stronger.

    Transplant after purchase

Freshly bought azalea is undesirable to immediately undergo a transplant procedure.
Let the plant stay in quarantine for several days - separately from other flowers.

During this time, it adapts to unfamiliar conditions and can safely move into a new pot.

Azalea is often sold in a flowering store and, according to the rules, it cannot be transplanted at this very moment.

However, if it is flooded and sick or it is clearly a small container, an exception can be made and the soil and the pot can be changed. But this should be done very carefully, using the transshipment method, only slightly clearing the root ball.

Propagation of azaleas at home by cutting

After wilting inflorescences azalea is often thrown away. The plant can be easily propagated at home.

In room conditions it is easy enough to spread azalea by cuttings. It is advisable to carry out the procedure in the spring and summer. For quick rooting you need:

    1. Подготовить кислый, питательный субстрат.
    2. Размер черенков должен составлять не менее девяти сантиметров. Нижнюю часть побегов необходимо очистить от листьев. Сверху на стебле можно оставить несколько вегетативных органов.
    3. It is recommended to perform a side slice directly below the leaf group or bud.
    4. For breeding lush plants should use a beautiful blooming azalea. It is not recommended to take shoots from damaged or infected culture.
    5. Cuttings for breeding can be cut no more than once a year.
    6. To stimulate the formation of its own roots, cuttings should be placed in the stimulator solution. It is enough to dissolve two tablets "Heteroauxin" in one liter of water at room temperature. A bundle of fifteen cuttings must be dipped into the container with the preparation. After six hours, the shoots are ready for planting. You can also use effective drugs for azaleas - "Zircon" and "Kornevin."
    7. The treated stems are transferred to the nutrient substrate. The depth of landing should be no more than four centimeters. It is necessary to observe the distance between the shoots - about three centimeters.
    8. For planting it is recommended to use shallow containers, bowls or small greenhouses.
    9. At the bottom of the tank should definitely lay out a layer of drainage no more than three centimeters. It is advisable to use expanded clay, pebbles, gravel, or bits of broken dishes.
    10. From above you need to pour two handfuls of clean sand of medium grain.
    11. Pots should be filled with prepared mixture of coniferous soil and softened peat.
    12. Planted cuttings must be covered with plastic wrap.
    13. Azalea should be sprayed daily.

You can also use vermiculite for distribution. Soil mixture contributes to the rapid rooting of cuttings.

It is important to provide azaleas with proper conditions. It should maintain a temperature of about + 25 degrees. The relative humidity level should be at least 80 percent.

In a favorable environment, shoots will be able to take root in 45-60 days. By this time, the cuttings will have their own massive root system.

The temperature in the room below + 22 degrees will destroy the planting material. Experienced gardeners recommend heating the substrate with warm heaters.

    Care for cuttings

Planted azaleas require constant care. Keep container in a well-lit area. You will need to regularly rotate the tank for even sunlight.

It is recommended to carry out the procedure from mid-July until the end of October.

    Planted cuttings need constant care.

Planted cuttings must be aired every morning. Half an hour is enough cuttings for a daily supply of air.

When the first shoots appear on the azaleas, you can remove the shelter. At this stage, the plant formed the first roots. It is important to provide high humidity environment. You should constantly spray the azalea. It is not advisable to allow the substrate to dry out. You can also place an open container with water near the container.

Compliance with all conditions ensures the survival of cuttings more than ninety percent.

Additional information on azalea cutting can be obtained from the video:

One of the successful methods of reproduction of seedlings is the addition of plant shoots to obtain branches. The best time to perform the operation is the spring period, during which it is necessary to prepare a groove with a depth of several centimeters.

Next, the selected shoot is fixed at the prepared site using wooden and metal hooks. The upper part of the plant have upright, tying to a peg previously driven into the ground.

After that, the prikopanny shoot mulch on a site of a bend with addition of a soil substrate and during the period of rooting support humidity, necessary for growth.

Not only Azalea is subject to reproduction by layering. Many plants can reproduce in a variety of ways. We have already told how to multiply the hydrangea layers.

    Azalea transplant, sequence of actions

Plant transplants are performed after acquiring azaleas, since the growing root system requires more extensive space. Another case in which it is necessary to perform a transplant of a flower is to perform its reproduction, for example, by dividing a bush.

    Basic rules of procedure:

Before it should be removed from the plant faded buds, because in the opposite case, the seeds will be laid, which will greatly deplete the azalea undergoing stress.

It is necessary to exclude transplantation on unfavorable days and during the winter period of time, since all processes at this time are inhibited. The best time to perform the procedure is the growing season and the growth of new shoots in the spring.

Do not transplant azalea during flowering!

Before transplanting, it is recommended to cut off old leaves and twigs.

It is forbidden to move an azalea during the flowering period, since the forces it takes to rooting and flowering can excessively deplete the plant and lead to its death.

As soil it is necessary to use special substrate:

How and when to prepare cuttings

Cuttings are cut from an adult plant after it has faded. Cut the upper parts from the half-year processes, cutting off at an acute angle just under the kidney itself. Lower leaves are removed, leaving part of the petiole, and the rest is cut to half.

    Rooting cuttings

The ideal breeding ground for azalea cuttings is rotted needles and peat in equal parts. Before rooting, the stalk is kept for about six hours in the solution of “Heteroauxin”, immersing the tip of the shoot in it. It stimulates rooting and increases the chances of rooting.

Drainage is laid out at the bottom of the container or pot (3 cm layer), covered with sand (2 cm layer) and prepared soil. A sapling is deepened three centimeters into the ground; if several plants are planted, the distance between them should be up to five centimeters. After landing it is necessary to water plentifully.

How to care for azalea cuttings

It is not enough to know how azalea multiplies. We also need knowledge about the care of seedlings to create all the necessary conditions for the plant.

After planting and watering, the container with the cuttings is covered with a film and placed in partial shade. Temperature conditions should be in the range of 25 to 30 ° С, air humidity - 80%. The flower is not watered, but moistened by spraying, combining it with airing. The plant should breathe and be in moderately wet soil.

A week before transplantation, the plant undergoes a hardening step. The film from the mini-greenhouse is removed for two hours, gradually increasing the time. Then get rid of it completely. If you follow all the rules, the azalea will take root within a month.

Transplant cuttings to a permanent place

As well as reproduction of azaleas at home, its further transplantation has its own nuances.

After successful rooting, the cuttings are transplanted into separate pots, again covered with foil. In a greenhouse, young plants are kept for about twelve days; this is a sufficient period for adaptation. After three months, the azalea tops are pinched; if buds appear, they need to be removed. The plant needs to gain strength and increase lateral shoots.

After a successful wintering, the azalea is transplanted to a permanent place and looked after as an adult plant. For permanent residence pick up the pot to 12 cm in diameter, with holes for water. At the bottom of the stack drainage. Sapling hand over with soil clod. After two or three years azalea bloom.

Why seed method of reproduction of azaleas are not used at home

Propagation by seeds of this plant is mainly done by experienced flower growers, and even then in order to develop new flower species. Azalea seeds do not retain the characteristics of the parent plant, they have a very low germination rate. After a successful sowing, there is no guarantee that the seedlings will survive and become a healthy adult plant.

When and how to sow the azalea

Before starting to propagate the azalea with seeds, some preparation is necessary. For a seed pot, you need to prepare drainage. To do this, take a small pebble or expanded clay and sterilize them. Heat the oven to 100 degrees and hold the drainage material there for about 20 minutes.

Put the drain in the pot. Pour a layer of sand to 3 cm, then the ground. Sowing is done in early March. Azalea seeds are mixed with sand and sown not deeply in a moist soil. The surface of the pot is covered with glass and set in a place well-lit by the sun.

    How to care for seedlings

Seedlings need to be constantly aired. Watering is done from the spray with soft water. To soften the water, add oxalic acid (2 grams per 5 liters). Soil can not pereuvlazhnyat to avoid rotting sprouts. Azalea seedlings will appear in two weeks if the seeds were fresh.

    Azalea picking rules

Strong emerged shoots dive into another container along with a clod of earth. The composition of the soil is needed the same as in propagation by cuttings. Shoots deepened, leaving the leaves above the surface, the distance between the shoots - up to 3 cm.

At the end of the summer, the grown bushes are transplanted into individual containers up to ten centimeters in diameter. Further care is the same as for cuttings (moderate moisture, pinching and hardening). Azalea, propagated by seeds, blooms in five years.

How to multiply the azalea by dividing the bush

If you have an old bush, azalea may be multiplied by dividing it. In the spring before the start of active growth, the bush is removed from the pot. With a sharp knife it is divided at the base into parts, leaving one (at a minimum) escape. The separation process must be extremely careful, as the roots of azaleas are very fragile. After planting delenki need to pour abundantly and put in a dark place for the successful adaptation of the plant for a week. Next requires attentive care.

Azaleainteresting flower, despite the difficulties of reproduction and cultivation. She is loved by many flower growers and lovers of indoor plants. The biggest plus of azaleas is that it blooms in winter. Outside the window, cold and snow, and in the room - a blooming garden.

    Propagation of azalea by cutting

In the summer from an adult bush azaleas cut off the stalk length of 6-7 cm. Make an oblique cut under the bud, and remove the lower leaves. Put the cutting for 5 hours in the root solution.

For reproduction of azaleas, it is better to use lumbery young cuttings.

Next, plant a cutting in a pot or a plastic bottle (you can have several pieces at once in one container). To create greenhouse conditions, cover the top with a can or cling film stretched over the frame.

Azalea is taking root in absolute darkness, therefore it is necessary to put on dark fabric on the created “greenhouse”.

Put the pot with cuttings in a warm room (20-25 degrees Celsius). Further care is frequent watering and spraying, as the azalea is very moisture-loving and will not take root in dry soil.

After the first sprouts appear (after 2 months), the shelter is removed, but not immediately. It is necessary to gradually open the can or lift the film, each time increasing the time. After the rooted cuttings grow up to 2 cm in height, they should be pinched to stimulate the growth of lateral shoots and the formation of a young lush bush. The first buds are also removed so that the bush actively grows green mass. With the help of grafting, you can get an adult young azalea in two years.

    Seed propagation

Azalea seeds are sown in March on moistened peat. Do not sprinkle the earth on top, just spray the seeds. Cover with foil or glass and place on a well-lit window sill. Instead of watering the seeds every day to spray, as well as regularly aired.

The best germination are fresh seeds that are not more than three months old.

After seed germination, the film is removed, and when a pair of true leaves appears, the azalea seedlings swoop into a common container with a distance of about 5 cm. It is possible to transplant the bushes into separate pots at the end of summer.

    Graft cutting

For the stock to be grafted, choose an adult plant (at least three years old) that is well rooted. Take a stalk from him 15 cm long with roots. Separately, cut the stalk from a young azalea shoot.

The cuts on both cuttings should be made equally (oblique).

Attach both cuttings with the cut-off area on top of each other and wrap it around with a film. Plant graft in a pot and cover with foil. Water and spray the plant.
