The apple-tree branch Zhigulevskoe is often called late autumn or early winter variety. This old variety was bred in 1936 by S.P. Kedrin at the Samara Experimental Station by hybridizing Borovinka vulgaris with Wagner prize.

Zhigulevskoe received wide distribution in the central regions of Russia. The variety was included in 1965 in the State Register of breeding achievements in the Central, Central Black Earth, North Caucasus, Middle Volga, Lower Volga regions, as well as in the form of stanza - in the East Siberian region.

Fruits are flat-rounded in shape, wide ridge, sometimes with golden-rusted tubercles. The funnel is deep, very wide, medium-rust. The saucer is wide, of medium depth. The stem is of medium length and thickness. The peel is smooth, durable, golden yellow with a red-orange blurred and brightly carmine-red striped blush over most of the fruit. The flesh is creamy, juicy, tender, dense, aromatic.

When planting, it is necessary to take into account the self-infertility of the apple of this variety and place the sapling next to pollinators - varieties that bloom at the same time.

Seedlings on seed stock will always be less demanding to the conditions of growth and care for them.

When planting seedlings, consider on which stock graft is grafted. For seed plants - the distance between trees is at least 4 m, for clonal semi-dwarfs and dwarfs - 2.5 - 2 m.

The first 2–3 years there is no need to fertilize apple trees, since a sufficient amount was brought in during planting. Mature trees fertilize 3 times per season. The first top dressing in the form of 500 g of urea or rotted manure per tree is brought in the middle of spring. The second time feeding is made at the beginning of flowering. It is best to use mineral nitrogen fertilizers, following the instructions on the packaging, either liquid bird droppings or mullein (¼ fertilizer buckets for ¾ of water buckets).

After flowering, an apple tree will not be superfluous to feed with nitropha or sodium humate, strictly following the instructions on the packaging of fertilizers.

Regardless of the planting season for young trees watering is required. The best time for it is considered early morning or late evening. For each month, there are about 5-6 waterings. During the dry summer period with insufficient soil moisture, it is necessary to water twice a day every 5–7 days. On 1 young tree 2–3 buckets of water are enough.

Protection against diseases and pests

The apple tree variety Zhigulevskoe is resistant to scab disease. Against the powdery mildew, you can use the drug Scor (2 ml per 10 l of water) or Topaz (2 ml per 10 l of water).

The most dangerous pest for this variety is considered moth, and especially its second generation. To minimize the spoilage of trees and apples, you can sprinkle apple trees with wormwood extract (25 ml of infusion in 10 liters of water) before beginning flowering 2 times with an interval of 5-7 days.

Hanging bundles of wormwood in the treetops also scares the moths. When the old bundle completely loses its flavor, it should be replaced with a new one.

From other pests, it is recommended to spray trees with a solution of karbofos (70–90 g per 10 l of water) after the formation of ovaries.

In the spring after pruning, the apple trees are whitened to protect the bark from insects and pests. This is best done in dry and clear weather. Young trees covered with chalk solution, and the old - with lime.

Harvesting and storage

The variety is characterized by increased yield, but 5–6 years after the first harvest of fruits the tree periodically bears fruit. With one adult tree with proper care, you can remove 200-250 kg. In order for the collected fruits to retain their taste and appearance for a certain time, it is necessary to properly organize the storage conditions.

Harvesting takes place in the first decade of September, and in the dry summer - at the end of August, but the fruits reach full maturity 2–4 weeks after removal.

Ripe apples do not fall off, which facilitates harvesting and preserves the original quality of the fruit.

It is recommended to store fruits in a dry cool room with a temperature of -2 to +4 degrees, in special wooden boxes or cardboard boxes with holes. In this case, apples sprinkle with dry wood chips or wrapped in paper. In such conditions, the shelf life of apples is 70–90 days.
